Communication Strategies

The aim is to enable young people, parents, carers, wider family, school staff parents, carers, wider family, school staff and organisations to communicate more effectively using the young person’s preferred method.

This may include a range visual communication strategies:

  • a personal profile
  • symbol based communication
  • object based communication
  • use of mobile phone / tablet technology

The steps involved in this type of activity include:

  • a face to face or video meeting with parents, carers, wider family, school staff and organisations to gather information on current communication strategies and any specific issues
  • face to face meetings with young people to look at their current and preferred style of communication and to get their views on how well this works
  • working with the young person to develop a strategy or strategies that they could use effectively
  • reviewing and modifying the strategy or strategies with everyone involved in using them

Each session will normally last for an hour. Some steps in this process may take more than one session depending on the needs of the young person.
